City and County of Broomfield, Colorado

About Broomfield, CO
Broomfield is a unified city and county known for strong community spirit, balanced growth, and abundant parks and open spaces. Its GIS team manages a vast array of data crucial for city and county infrastructure, planning, and community services.
About Open Spatial
Open Spatial delivers cutting-edge niche geospatial technology solutions, enhancing data management and operational efficiency across public and private sectors. They specialize in integrating CAD data with GIS, fostering streamlined, error- minimized workflows.
The Challenge
Broomfield faced significant challenges in transforming CAD document submittals to GIS data for new developments and capital projects; a procedure fraught with inefficiencies and errors. A CAD data submittal standard was not in place and the traditional methods to convert CAD data to GIS data are slow with the potential for data inaccuracies. The need for a seamless, accurate conversion process was important to support the GIS operations team responsible for incorporating new data in the city’s enterprise GIS. Validating and integrating these documents into the city’s GIS was cumbersome and involved multiple manual steps. Often, new infrastructure was re-surveyed, and the as-built drawings were only referred to as a last resort. This inefficiency highlighted the need for a more automated solution that could enable standardized CAD drawing submittals and handle complex data loading effortlessly into the existing municipal GIS solution.
"Using ACDC has enabled us to establish a digital, data-centric workflow as part of plan submittal review and documentation. This is invaluable for ensuring we have accurate and timely data already available at the end of every project."
- Adrian Kropp, Manager of GIS City and County of Broomfield
The Solution

ACDC
Broomfield adopted Open Spatial’s ACDC Portal to automate the validation and transformation of CAD data into ArcGIS Enterprise, streamlining data processing workflows.

ArcGIS Enterprise
The fully attributed and validated GIS data is directly published to ArcGIS Enterprise, ensuring real-time data availability and facilitating enhanced spatial analysis across city departments.
The Outcome
The new digital workflow provided a CAD standard, automated data validation, and direct data consumption, dramatically reducing processing times and enhancing data quality. With direct integration into the City's Enterprise GIS Portal, the city benefited from immediate data availability and the automated capture of high quality data. The streamlined process enables quicker turnaround times for CAD data conversion, supporting more accurate planning and decision-making. The standardized and automated system minimized errors and ensured consistency across data sets, fundamentally transforming Broomfield’s approach to handling CAD-based spatial data and reinforcing its commitment to technological advancement and operational efficiency.
